What is a Palatal Expander in The Woodlands TX?
A palatal expander is an orthodontic appliance designed to gently widen the upper jaw (palate) over time. This appliance is most effective when used in children and pre-teens whose jawbones are still developing and can be guided more easily.
Why is Palatal Expansion Needed?
A narrow upper jaw can lead to:
- Crowded or overlapping teeth
- Crossbites (when the upper teeth bite inside the lower teeth)
- Breathing difficulties due to limited space in the nasal passages
By widening the upper jaw, a palatal expander can:
- Create more room for permanent teeth to come in properly
- Improve bite alignment
- Support better airway function
How Does it Work?
The expander is custom-made and fits over a few upper teeth in the back of the mouth. A small key is used to gradually turn the device at home usually once a day which slowly and gently unzips the bones of the palate. Active treatment with the expander typically lasts a few months, including time to allow new bone to form and stabilize.
What to Expect
- Mild pressure or tightness for a few minutes after each turn
- A gap may temporarily appear between the front teeth—this is normal and shows the appliance is working
- Clear instructions and in-office guidance from our team
